rant, rant, rant, rant, rant
this is a rant, be warned.

okay, I posted two icon tutorials. not my best work by a long shot but people asked me to do a tutorial on them. so apparently someone liked them.

okay here's my rant, has to do with icon_tutorial. okay the second tut they deleted cause it doesn't have enough layer's to constitute a tutorial. okay, whatever. I usually have a whole heck of a lot more layers in my icons but it just happened that one didn't. also my layers aren't complex, they are usually really simple.

the first one they deleted for the same reasons, wth? umm, that one had a selective coloring layer and a few different textures with it. A little bit more complex, and it was still deleted. whatever. your rules, I guess.

okay, I can see the one tut being deleted, it is after all only one selective coloring layer but the other one, I don't get it?

I think there rules are a tad bit strict don't you think.

makes me want to go and create my own graphics journal, with my own tutorials no matter how crappy they are. maybe I'm just PMS-ing. I don't know.

thanks, I'm glad someone agrees with me. I've been toying a lot with making my own graphics community.

Damn, and I was going to bookmark those! Trying to teach myself, I'm a member of several tut sites and I find a lot of the ones on that particular site to be good, but sometimes incredibly long and involved and not always fully explained. Really sorry you had such a bad experience there.

Yes, please! If I could, I'd help you. I've always loved your icons and would love to pick up a few tips.

thanks! I know what you mean. sometimes I just don't want to try out tutorials if they are too long or complicated.

Typical LJ "I'm smarter than you" crap. Everyone has their own opinion. I've clashed with enough people on LJ to know that and if it is their community, they can do what they want with it - fair or no.

A good tutorial tells people enough about how to make the icon so that they could make something simular if they choose. Yours do - they are good tutorials - 'nuff said.

I think this is the first time I've experienced the "smarter than you" crap on lj. I haven't been here that long.

thanks for the reassurance.

This is stupid! What does it matter how many layers?! Sometimes you need 10, and sometimes you need 1!
jennifer jensenjenniferjensen on June 14th, 2009 10:48 pm (UTC)
I know, my thoughts exactly. sometimes you need one layer and sometimes you need a whole bunch more than that.

a tutorial is a tutorial, who are they to judge what makes a tutorial a tutorial
if you make a graphic community, I'd join and help out!

thanks! I know, I didn't think there were any set rules on how to make a tutorial, as long as people are able to follow it.

I have to agree that the mod of the comm can be a bitch; I had a run in with her myself, and left the community.

I think the community became overwhelmed with coloring tutorials that were just recipes and didn't really 'teach' any techniques, and that's why they now have more stringent requirements, and why they delete tutorials that don't meet them. It wasn't personal, they've deleted a lot of them.

Coloring recipes really aren't that useful, because they can't be applied to different pictures, with the same results as the tutorial. I don't know if your tuts had anything other than coloring, but there is a community just for coloring = icon_coloring, so maybe you should post there instead :)

If there were other techniques involved, then she was wrong to delete your tutorial, imo, but she's the mod(god) lol

never new about icon_coloring. thanks for pointing that out. I could maybe see her point on the coloring tutorial, but I'm baffled about why the other one was deleted. it had nothing to do with coloring and gave no reason, just deleted it. okay then.

Well that's kinda dumb of them. I think anything to show others how to create some awesome coloring or whatnot would be accepted. But whatev..... I wouldn't stree about it. I think doing your own thing is best.
jennifer jensenjenniferjensen on June 15th, 2009 03:06 am (UTC)
exactly, I'm definitely not going to stress about it.

Too many rules will kill a community, icon-tutorial is the perfect case in point.
Who cares about the number of layers, your tutorials were instructional and informative therefore are clearly tutorials and should have been accepted. Silly people.

silly people indeed.
